April 9th – 13th | Pretending to Pretend | Solo exhibition by Jacques Roland Hoogwater

Pretending to Pretend is a solo exhibition by Jacques Roland Hoogwater, taking place as part of an international exchange between the Dutch artist and Dublin artist Kerry Guinan. These two artists share a motivation to implicate those in the extra-art-world in their work, manifesting itself in micro-interventions in social situations. This particular international exchange sees the artists swap contexts: Pretending to Pretend will be succeeded by an exhibition by Guinan in Groningen on April 18th.

In Pretending to Pretend Hoogwater queries and subverts the histories that mould personal relationships. Through the appropriation of friends and family members as subjects for discussion, he draws fictional connections between past and present events, often unbeknownst to those affected. As such, this series of works tests the bonds of intimacy and trust. They are presented in Pretending to Pretend through mixed media installation, often encompassing popular artefacts as universal signifiers.
